IOCAG researcher makes new discovery regarding the age of the Sahara Desert
New research on particles trapped in fossilised soils in Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria has revealed that the Sahara Desert has been sending waves of dust towards the Atlantic and Europe for at least 4.6 million years. IOCAG member, Alejandro Lomoschitz, is part of the team which has detected the presence of quartz and mica in these islands, minerals which do not occur naturally in the Archipelago but are fundamental components of the dust and sand-laden African wind known as "Calima".
