La Provincia reports on the future disappearance of Las Canteras beach
La Provincia newspaper is the latest medium to dedicate a lengthy article to the alarming information provided by Alonso Hernández Guerra during his SOCLIMPACT online talk last month. The conclusions outlined by Dr. Hernández Guerra, together with fellow IOCAG member Luis Hernández Calvento and Pedro Vélez Belchí of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) were reached following an analysis of the increased waterline of the beach profile and based on sea level rise estimates provided by the IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). If current trends continue, the main sandy areas of Las Canteras beach could be completely engulfed by waves during high tides by the end of the century at the very latest. Dr Hernández Guerra emphasized that it was a matter of basic physics: "it's unstoppable, it's a liquid that expands on heating, no matter what".
