La Provincia reports on the ocean research work still afloat in the Canary Islands
La Provincia newspaper has reported that despite recent events that have thrown into the spotlight the budget problems of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) and culminated in the resignation of the head of its governing council, this profound crisis has not affected approximately 50 oceanography projects still underway in the Canary Islands. Of these, some 30 come under the auspices of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (Plocan) while another dozen are being carried out by the ULPGC. IOCAG director, Alonso Hernández Guerra, indicated that the source of IEO's problem was the centralisation of expenditure approval in Madrid and while IOCAG was not greatly affected by the situation, being funded from a different source, with the IEO a joint participant in a South Atlantic project together with IOCAG, The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and The Insititute of Marine Sciences (ICM), the situation had repercussions on the pooled data obtained from samples independently collected.
