Norma Pérez Almeida
Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Dr. Pérez-Almeida holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Sciences from the National Distance Education University (UNED) and a doctoral degree in Chemical Sciences from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Her teaching career has been at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where she currently serves as an Associate Professor since 2013.
Her research activities are focused on the physico-chemical and biogeochemical processes of trace metals in the marine environment, primarily iron and copper. Within this research line, she has co-authored several publications and has participated in numerous research projects aimed at determining the role of various environmental parameters, mainly pH, temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, and hydrogen peroxide concentration, in the oxidation kinetics of Fe and Cu, as well as the action of each metal in the redox kinetics of the other. Currently, her research efforts are concentrated on determining the effect of organic exudates present in natural waters on the oxidation rate of Fe and therefore its bioavailability, as well as the potential impact of ocean acidification on this process.
